Mr. NONAME is NCV’s first international venture. Raye and Bubbi approached us with only the location of Brussels in mind (the city Bubbi grew up in). From then on we devised and planned a narrative led music video that would reflect the diversity of the song itself. Mr. NONAME blends singer-songwriter style with 808 beats of the hiphop genre. Striking visuals lead this music video as it takes you on a pitted tour of Brussels’ most famous landmarks. The narrative in this film is inspired by The Man Who Loved Women (Truffaut, 1977), combined with the comedic police procedural of Spike Jonze’s Sabotage by the Beastie Boys. Since the song is about falling in love from afar, so too is the story of the film with a dangerous spy/mob affiliation. We used this opportunity to use scene transitions as a method to drive the story forward and link the many locations. For example match cuts were used many times making sure “great care ... (was) taken when shooting both sides of a match cut.” (Brown, 2012, p100). The result is an intriguing and re-watchable video that is as charming as it is engaging.
